KBL Round 38 (Regular Season): #1 LG Sakers are defeated by Sono SG

The most surprising game was a loss of top-ranked Sakers (29-13) in Changwon on Monday night. Hosts were defeated by seventh ranked Skygunners (19-23) 79-62. Sono SG looked well-organized offensively handing out 24 assists. Filipino Kevin Quiambao (193-2001) scored 21 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists to lead the charge for the winners and American power forward Nathan Knight (208-1997, college: William & Mary) chipped in 22 points and 6 rebounds during the contest. Egyptian center Assem Marei (206-1992, college: MSU) responded with a double-double by scoring 17 points, 13 rebounds and 5 assists. Both coaches used bench players which allowed the starters a little rest for the next games. Sono SG maintains seventh position with 19-23 record. Defending champion LG Sakers still keep top place with 13 games lost. Sono SG are looking forward to face Seoul Thunders (#9) at home in the next round. LG Sakers will play against KCC Egis (#5) in Busan and are hoping to win this game.

However their fans expected much easier game. American center Jameel Warney (203-1994, college: Stony Brook) notched 38 points (!!!) and 9 rebounds to lead the effort and Youngjun An supported him with 11 points, 5 rebounds and 8 assists. Even 27 points, 9 rebounds and 9 assists by Turkish power forward Kerem Kanter (208-1995, college: Xavier) did not help to save the game for Seoul Thunders. Samsung Thunders' coach tried various players' combinations and tested in total eleven players in this game, but that didn't help. Knights have an impressive seven-game winning streak. Seoul Knights maintains second position with 27-15 record having just two points less than leader LG Sakers. Seoul Thunders at the other side keep the ninth place with 29 games lost. Seoul Knights will play against bottom-ranked Daegu (#10) in Incheon in the next round and are hoping to win another game. Seoul Thunders will play on the road against Sono SG in Daegu and it may be a tough game between close rivals.

In the last two games of round 38 Suwon KT won against Daegu on the opponent's court 98-86. Wonju DB managed to outperform Mobis Phoebus in a home game 90-80.

Seoul Thunders - Seoul Knights 79-82

Daegu - Suwon KT 86-98

Very expected game in Incheon where 10th ranked Daegu (12-30) was defeated by sixth ranked Sonicboom (21-22) 98-86. Suwon KT made 20-of-25 charity shots (80.0 percent) during the game. Their players were unselfish on offense dishing 21 assists. Daegu was plagued by 28 personal fouls down the stretch. American forward Derrick Williams (203-1991, college: Arizona) notched 26 points and 6 assists to lead the effort and forward Doo-Won Lee (199-2000) supported him with 22 points and 11 rebounds (on 8-of-9 shooting from the field). Even a double-double of 19 points and 10 assists by Filipino guard Samjosef Belangel (177-1999) did not help to save the game for Daegu. The former international forward Ricardo Ratliffe (203-1989, college: Missouri) added 18 points and 12 rebounds (on 9-of-11 shooting from the field) for the hosts. Four Suwon KT and five Daegu players scored in double figures. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Suwon KT maintains sixth position with 21-22 record. Daegu lost third consecutive game. They stay dead last with 30 lost games. Suwon KT will have a break next round, and it should allow them to practice more before next game. Daegu will play at home against the league's second-placed Seoul Knights (#2) and hopes to get back on the winning track.

Rather predictable result when fourth ranked Wonju DB (26-15) defeated at home 8th ranked Mobis Phoebus (15-27) 90-80. American guard Ethan Alvano (185-1996, college: CSUSM) notched 27 points and 6 assists to lead the effort and the other American import center Henry Ellenson (208-1997, college: Marquette) supported him with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Alvano is a former Eurobasket Summer League player, which is considered top international summer league in the market. Four Wonju DB players scored in double figures. Even a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds by American center Rayshaun Hammonds (206-1998, college: Georgia) did not help to save the game for Mobis Phoebus. Guard Myeong-jin Seo (191-1999) added 16 points, 7 rebounds and 9 assists for the guests. Both coaches tested many bench players and allowed the starting five to rest. Wonju DB moved-up to third place, which they share with Anyang. Mobis Phoebus at the other side keep the eighth position with 27 games lost. Wonju DB will play against Anyang (#3) on the road in the next round, which may be the game of the day. Mobis Phoebus will have a break next round.
